Peterson's Orders and Medals of Japan and Associated States has long been considered a Publication's priority for the Orders and Medals Society of America. Published in 1967 as the Society's first monograph, Peterson's work rapidly became a collector community classic and established a standard of publication excellence for OMSA. Serious work began on the third edition in late 1996. It was decided to re-photograph as much of the basic ma- terial as possible, to significantly enlarge the Japanese badge section, and to add new material from Manchukuo and Inner Mongolia. Most of Peterson's organizational framework and virtually all of the text has been retained. War and Commemorative medals were separated, but are still presented chronologically. A Table of Contents and List of Illustrations were added. Reformatting text and the addition of new material increased both the page count and the number of illustrations. Special attention was given to photographs. Ninety-five percent of the black and white and all of the color work were shot professionally. Where possible, insignia have been reproduced at one and a half times actual size to better illustrate design elements. The new material was supplemented with fifteen of the original photographs. It was necessary to omit a few first edition illustrations because the old negatives were lost or too severely damaged to be reproduced. Additional work remains to be done in the field. A colored ribbon chart is a major deficiency in the third edition as is the lack of award criteria for the Japanese proficiency badges. Current awards of the Japanese Self Defense Force would also be of value to collectors, historians and other interested parties. It is hoped that the use of digital files as camera-ready copy will facilitate publication of future additions and up- dating of Orders and Medals of Japan and Associated States. INTRODUCTION This work is intended to cover the awards of the Japanese Empire, the Korean Empire, and Manchukuo. The later two nations were closely associated with Japan, and followed the Japanese system of orders. Decorations were created by other Japanese-sponsored governments in Inner Mongolia, East Hopei, China, and the Philippines, but these awards were not heavily influenced by the Japanese system. However, a few awards of Inner Mongolia and East Hebei are illustrated for general interest. Awards of the current Japanese Self Defense Forces fall outside the scope of this work. It may be helpful to readers not familiar with the field of orders and medals to understand that there are three basic types of awards meant to be displayed on clothing: orders, decorations and medals. Badges are generally considered to be a type of medal. An order is an officially recognized organization in which membership carries a connotation of prestige and merit, and which by tradition issues distinctive insignia to be worn by its members. Orders are almost always di- vided into tiers or classes based upon the level of accomplishment. Each class of an order has its own distinctive insigne, usually with similarities in design. The highest ranking classes are usually reserved for high ranking civilians and military officers of flag rank. Decorations are awarded for gallantry or meritorious service, and medals to recognize service in a war or cam- paign or to commemorate a significant event. Other medals are presented to denote membership in a specific organization such as the Red Cross. The Author James W. Peterson was an early member of the Orders and Medals Society of America serving as both Vice President and Direc- tor. He was a precise, meticulous, and very technically oriented researcher, and a fre- quent contributor to The Medal Collector, the Journal of the Society. His style of research is reflected in his writings, includ- ing Orders and Medals of Japan and Associated States. He had a wide range of numismatic interests. During World War II, Jim served as Commander of the Honor Guard at South- west Pacific Headquarters and later, was attached to General MacArthur's Head- quarters in Japan. During this period, his interest in Japanese awards flourished. In later life, Jim was a government con- sultant, retiring to Columbus, Ohio where he died in February 1994. The Editors Barry Weaver joined the Orders and Medals Society of America in 1977 and has served the Society as Director of Publications since 1995. He has contributed to both The Medal Collector and The Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America, the current Society periodical. His collecting interests include awards of Imperial China, the Boxer Uprising, and military awards of the United States. He resides in Atlanta where he practices Cosmetic Dentistry. Michael Quigley has been a member of the Society for a number of years and has also contributed to Society publications. His long term collecting interests in Japanese militaria led to a full time business in San Antonio. He appraises and sells all types of Japanese art, including orders, medals, old swords, woodblock prints, and other civilian items. Michael hosts an annual Japanese Art and Militaria Show in San Antonio each May.
